Healing From the Inside Out: Introducing Trauma-Informed Yoga Groups

At Jersey Medical Care, we believe healing happens when mind and body are treated as one. That belief is what makes us so proud to introduce our newest offering: Trauma-Informed Yoga Groups led by our very own Registered Yoga Teacher and licensed clinician, Jessenia Cantillo, LCSW, RYT.

Informed by evidence-based trauma research and yoga philosophy, these groups are not your typical vinyasa classes. Instead, they are gentle, supportive, and centered entirely on you.

"Trauma-informed yoga helps reconnect individuals to their bodies in a way that feels safe and empowering," says Jessenia. "Through breathwork, movement, and mindful awareness, we help participants build a different, more compassionate relationship with their body."

What Makes Trauma-Informed Yoga Different?

Unlike traditional yoga, trauma-informed yoga does not focus on perfecting poses. There is no touching, correcting, or demanding. Instead, everything is invitational. Participants are encouraged to listen to their bodies, rest when needed, and explore movement at their own pace.

You won’t hear cues like "get into this pose." Instead, you might hear, "If it feels comfortable for you, you're welcome to explore this shape." That small difference in language is powerful — it builds safety, autonomy, and trust.

Why Does This Matter?

Our bodies store trauma. Whether it's grief, anxiety, or experiences we may not even remember, emotional pain often lives in our muscles, our breath, and our posture. Trauma-informed yoga gently creates space for release.

"Sometimes people cry during class. Sometimes they feel lighter afterward. That's healing happening," says Jessenia.

Who Is It For?

Everyone. No yoga experience needed. This group is ideal for:

  • People managing anxiety, depression, or PTSD

  • Those who feel "stuck in their head"

  • Individuals navigating grief, life transitions, or stress

  • People seeking to feel more at home in their body

Whether you're brand new to movement or already exploring mindfulness, this group can meet you exactly where you are.

What Can I Expect in a Session?

Each virtual group includes:

  • A grounding welcome and reminder of emotional safety

  • Breathwork or mindfulness to anchor you in the present

  • Gentle, trauma-informed movement with modifications

  • A closing relaxation and meditation

Camera-on is encouraged for safety, but not required. All bodies, all levels, all experiences are welcome.

Why Start Online?

Virtual groups allow participants to join from the comfort of home — a major benefit for those who find public spaces overwhelming. Over time, and as interest grows, we hope to evolve these groups into in-person offerings as well.
